If the Hickmans had telephoned 911 just as their son was born, one state doctor estimated that he“ would have had a 99 percent chance of survival.” David would be preschool age now.
The Hickmans were both convicted of second-degree manslaughter, a felony demanding the absolute minimum of six years and three months in prison. At sentencing, Judge Robert Herndon noted that among the congregation’s midwives, who often attended Followers births, appeared to understand almost no about premature infants.
“She’s one of the most dangerous individuals in Clackamas County,” Herndon said.
When the Hickmans were put on trial for manslaughter, Judge Linder notes, they told the court that they repent nothing about how they managed their premature birth.
“Both of them testified that, looking back on David’s death, they would not have done anything otherwise,” Linder wrote in her decision.
We put God first, and We do what the Bible tells us and ask for religion,”Shannon Hickman said at the time. “ If we do’t have the religion, then we seek medical treatment because it truly is not there, you know.”
Dale and Shannon Hickman will each spend the absolute minimum of 6 years and 3 months in prison for his or her crime.
