This Couple’s Baby Died 9 Hours After Delivery & They’re Going To Jail (Video)

A lot more than a decade ago, Oregon City officials claimed to have detected an unusually large number of child deaths.

At least 78 children are estimated to have perished since 1955 in the church , either in stillbirths or in childhood sicknesses that were treatable, and about ten girls have died in childbirth.

The Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted four couples fromFollowers of Christ for neglecting to seek medical attention for his or her children.

Dale and Shannon Hickman, whose premature son David died nine hours after being born, were sentenced to six years in prison. The church rejects modern medicine in favor of prayer and other spiritual practices like anointing the sick and preaches faith healing. The church is notorious for allowing children that are ill to suffer and even die rather than seeking medical attention.

A trial found that when Shannon went into labor two months early in 2009, the couple traveled to her mother’s house instead of a hospital. David Hickman resided for less than nine hours, and was born weighing three pounds, seven ounces.

The Hickmans testified that the infant did’t begin showing signs of misery until about 15 minutes before he died, which state experts said was not possible, and that they never considered phoning 911, per The Oregonian. David Hickman replied by holding the infant, anointing his head with olive oil, and praying.

That belief did not help David, who died as the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s office after determined within nine hours of his arrival, of staphylococcus pneumonia.
