General facts about SIDS

It is not known what is the real reason behind this syndrome, but there are many cases where children die due to suffocation in sleep, resulting in 35,000 deaths in the US each year. This makes it 40% of the cases, and other deaths of mishaps related to sleep make up around 25%. The syndrome occurs among children that are 6 months old.

This happens because of the apparatus in the sleeping area near the children like toys, soft pillow, little parts, furnishings, etc. which can block the breathing process due to asphyxia. Another reason may be a genetic defect the child may have been born with that obstructs the vulnerable nasal passaged and cause difficulty in breathing. Mothers can fall asleep during breast-feeding because of tiredness, leading to death of the infant. It is even more dangerous when mothers breast feed their children in an arm-chair with no surrounding support in case they fall.
