Known as Dumb Cane, this plant is native to the tropical Americas, that is, from Southern Mexico, through Central America, to northern South America and Brazil. The common name refers to the poisoning effect of raphides, which can cause a temporary inability to speak.

This plant has a straight stem, simple and alternate leaves with white spots and flecks, and it is therefore, rather attractive as an indoor plant. Its leaves are green and large. The flowers are white. However, its sap is toxic. Unfortunately, as a lot of people are unaware of this, they keep it in their homes and offices.
